March 3rd, 2010 – The List

This is what happens about 90% of the time I do this exercise.  I hand the coaching client about 10-12 blank index cards.  The first instruction is to write one thing on each card that is important in your life.  Here’s a few examples:

  • JOB
  • SANDY (wife)

The next step is to rank them in order.

Then I request the client review the list to make sure there are no omissions.  Next, I take a card and write one word and place it in front of the client.

The word is YOU.

The majority of the clients forget how important they are.  The rest will write ME but they place it in the middle of the list.  Or even worse, they place it towards the bottom.

Placing others before ourselves is an admirable trait.  But when our health, our goals, and our needs are neglected or sacrificed, we begin to feel that our lives are unfulfilled.  I know because I have been there.

Think about the spiel we hear each time we board a plane.  The flight attendant points out the exits and gives a demonstration about how to use the seat belt.  And if the cabin pressure decreases, they instruct you to give yourself oxygen before providing it for any children.

Sometimes it’s the same thing in life.  Help yourself so that you have the strength and ability to help someone else.  Take time to renew your mind, body and spirit.  Then you can teach others to do the same.

By the way…are you on the list?  And if you are, are you at the top…or the bottom?

Quote of the day:

Once we surrender ourselves to God completely, He will take care of us in every way                                                                                                   Unknown
